Jobs in science, tech, engineering and math are exponentially growing in Louisiana. However, there are too few students in STEM fields to meet the increasing demand for more local talent. As the only New Orleans public school built specifically for STEM education, the New Orleans Charter Science & Math High School, also known as Sci High, prepares students for college and successful careers through a rigorous curriculum and supportive learning environment. Originally founded in 1993 as a half-day program, Sci High became a full-day charter high school after Hurricane Katrina. Over the years, it changed locations multiple times and was outgrowing its previous site in a former elementary school uptown. In search of a permanent, dedicated space, Sci High opened a newly built $27.5 million facility in 2021 designed by VergesRome Architects for specialized STEM education.

The new facility was an exciting and important investment in the students and the community. Located on the site of the former Albert Wicker Elementary School on Bienville Street, Sci High is near the Lafitte Greenway, and its close proximity to the biomedical corridor in Mid-City strategically helps foster future partnerships for educational programming, internships and mentors. The three-story, 129,716-square feet building can accommodate 750 students and features high-tech classrooms and state-of-the-art-labs. It immerses the 9th – 12th graders into studies in fabrication, engineering, digital graphics, biomedical, computers and advanced tech. AOS worked with the school to provide colorful furniture and specialized storage solutions for labs, maker-spaces, a media center and library, breakout areas, a dining commons, teacher lounges, administrative offices and reception area. Flexible, mobile furniture enables a wide range of teaching styles and adapts to a variety of applications. It also encourages student engagement and supports hands-on learning. As a result, the new campus supports Sci High’s coursework and mission, accommodates its growing student population and empowers each person to reach their highest potential.
