St. John the Baptist Parish Library Reserve Branch – Leroy D. Williams Memorial Library

Located along River Road in Reserve, Louisiana, the new St. John the Baptist Parish Library, also known as the Leroy D. Williams Memorial Library, redefines the role of the modern library as a cultural and civic cornerstone. Adjacent to the historic St. John Theatre and the 1885/LeBrun House, the 30,000-square-foot facility forms a vibrant hub for community engagement. Designed by Ewing Cole and Kathryn Taylor Design, it addresses long-standing needs for improved accessibility, expanded parking, and additional programming, creating a more inclusive and practical space for patrons of all ages.

Anchored by a central atrium and staircase, the Reserve Library is bathed in natural light across all three floors, creating a bright and welcoming environment. The first floor features a vibrant children’s and early literature area, a library-run café, tutor rooms, a makerspace, and a dedicated staff lounge and workroom. On the second floor, visitors can enjoy cozy reading nooks, a computer area, several meeting and conference rooms, and direct access to an outdoor reading porch. Additionally, the third floor caters to large community gatherings and programming with a flexible multipurpose room and rooftop terrace.

Inspired by the natural landscape of south Louisiana, the design embraces connectivity and fosters lifelong learning in an atmosphere that feels both dynamic and deeply rooted in its community. The low-profile bookcases preserve the openness of each floor, allowing daylight to flow freely and supporting clear visual connections between zones. Furnishings and finishes were carefully selected for their playfulness, comfort, and durability. Whether tucked into a quiet study nook, gathered around a shared table, or exploring new technologies, guests experience a sense of fun and curiosity that reflects the library’s role as a safe, inspiring, and inclusive space for all.
